When many people think of plastic surgery, they usually picture invasive procedures, such as breast augmentation or facelift surgery, being performed in a surgical room. However, advancements in the effectiveness of minimally-invasive cosmetic treatments, such as filler injections and microdermabrasion, have seen a rise in popularity over the last few years. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the top five non-surgical procedures performed in 2013 were the following:
1. BOTOX® Cosmetic (6.3 million injections)
Up 3% from 2012, BOTOX® is a neurotoxin and probably the most recognizable non-invasive cosmetic treatment. Made of protein derived from botulinum toxin, this FDA-approved injectable temporarily reduces wrinkles by halting movement of the facial muscles injected. BOTOX® is most commonly used to reduce the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes (crow’s feet).
2. Dermal Fillers (2.2 million)
With an increase of 13% from 2012, soft-tissue fillers have become a staple in the world of cosmetic treatment. Besides providing volume to areas of the face, such as the cheeks, lips, and eye area, these fillers also provide hydration. At our Wyoming practice, we only carry fillers that are FDA-approved, including:
- Sculptra® Aesthetic
3. Chemical Peels (1.2 million)
Also up 3% from 2012, chemical peels correct fine lines and blemishes on the skin that occur due to aging and chronic sun exposure. Using ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) or trichloroacetic acids (TCA), dead skin cells are removed to reveal a noticeably healthier looking complexion with fewer imperfections.
4. Laser Hair Removal (1.1 million)
Although this procedure is down 4% from 2012, laser hair removal is still very popular among men and women of all ages. Intense pulses of laser light are applied directly to various areas of the face and body to permanently remove unsightly hair.
5. Microdermabrasion (970,000)
Microdermabrasion has consistently been one of the top five minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures and is typically desired by middle-aged individuals who wish to diminish the onset signs of aging. Sun spots, hyperpigmentation, and even minor scars on the face can be effectively reduced by a wand-like device that applies fine crystals directly to the skin. This procedure is typically more invasive than a chemical peel. At our Wyoming practice, we offer all of the above non-surgical treatments, as well as a wide range of other non-invasive cosmetic procedures.
