Many people who have experienced the success of major weight loss are left with sagging skin on their arms, breasts, thighs, or lower body. All who lose a significant amount of weight should be extremely proud of the new healthy body they have earned, but some are still dissatisfied with the way their body looks. Excess skin can not only potentially decrease confidence, but it can also get in the way of routine physical activity. Dr. Roussalis offers several body contouring procedures that remove this excess skin to restore a natural-looking form and function for these areas of the body.
Sagging breasts can result from pregnancy and aging as well as significant weight loss. Dr. Roussalis routinely performs the breast lift procedure (“mastopexy”) along with breast augmentation for patients who wish to increase the size of their breasts as well as lift them to a higher position. A breast lift typically involves an incision around the areola and vertically from below the areola to the breast crease. The nipple is moved to a higher position on the breast, the breast tissue is lifted and reshaped, and excess skin is removed. The result is a firmer, more youthful-looking breast contour.
A thigh lift can rid your body of saddle bags or it can prevent the inner thighs from rubbing together, depending on the technique used. A lateral thigh lift, also known as an outer thigh lift, will remove excess fat and skin from the outer thighs, while a medial thigh lift, also known as an inner thigh lift, will remove excess skin between the thighs. This procedure will not remove any excess fat unless liposuction is performed at the same time, which may be recommended in cases where skin elasticity is poor. Incision locations will vary depending on the areas to be treated and the degree of correction needed.
An arm lift, or brachioplasty, removes excess skin from the upper arm, which will result in a scar from the underarm to the elbow. The underlying tissue and fat is contoured to result in a more toned and proportionate appearance. Many experience restored mobility and increased confidence as a result of this procedure.
Lower Body Lift
The lower body lift will improve the contour of the abdomen, buttocks, and groin area. The length and pattern of the incision will depend on the amount and location of excess skin to be removed, but it typically involves a circumferential incision around the body that wraps around the hips and buttocks. Underlying tissues are tightened and held in place with support sutures to establish the improved body contour. Any excess skin is removed and redraped over the new shape to provide an overall improved appearance.
Dr. Roussalis also performs the buttock lift as well as the tummy tuck procedure to remove excess skin and restore a more youthful-looking contour to those areas of the body.
