Thanksgiving is almost here, and many of us have a lot to be thankful for. However, before gathering with family and friends this holiday, most people would be exceedingly grateful to have a rejuvenated appearance and not resemble the bird on the Thanksgiving table.

A turkey farm with one turkey facing forward and one side view of anotherThe common condition of excess fat and skin in the neck area is often referred to as a “turkey neck” because it can resemble the turkey’s wattle that waddles from side to side with any movement. Diet and exercise are often futile when it comes to improving a turkey neck, but Dr. Roussalis offers procedures that can effectively restore a more youthful, slender neck.

The appearance of a swaying turkey neck can be improved with liposuction and/or neck lift surgery.

Liposuction

Liposuction removes excess fat cells through tiny incisions with a suction cannula (thin hollow tube). Some swelling and bruising may be apparent after the procedure that will resolve over the following weeks. A more slender neck area will be immediately visible, but final results will develop over the next couple months as your body fully heals.

Liposuction can improve the following conditions that contribute to the appearance of a turkey neck:

  • A double chin
  • Excess fat
  • Displaced hanging fat

Neck Lift

Neck lift surgery removes excess skin in the neck through incisions along the hairline that wrap around the ears and end in the lower scalp. After the procedure, a more slender and taut neck will be apparent, but it may take several months for the incision to fully heal.

Neck lift surgery can effectively improve the following conditions that contribute to the appearance of a turkey neck:

  • Jowls (sagging along the jawline)
  • Loose, hanging skin
  • Stretched neck muscle (platysma muscle)
  • Displaced fat

Neck lift surgery can be combined with facelift surgery to correct a turkey neck and signs of aging in the midface (beneath the eyes, in the cheeks, and around the mouth).
