Watercolor art of woman with historic 18th-century costumeFrom paintings to song lyrics, the bodies of curvaceous women have been lauded since the dawn of time. Of course there are always exceptions, but there’s no doubt that the female form is admired by many. But just why is a well-proportioned body with an hourglass figure so desirable? Here, we delve into the scientific reasons for our attraction to women’s voluptuous curves.

Reward Centers in the Brain

A study published in 2010 found that, when viewing bodies of women with hourglass figures, areas of men’s brains that are associated with pleasure and reward are highly activated. The researchers asked a group of men to look at pictures of women before and after they underwent fat transfer to remove unwanted fat and add volume to specific areas, such as the buttocks and breasts, to create an hourglass figure. When the men looked at the images of the women’s shapely bodies after the procedure, not only did the men consistently rate the post-surgical bodies as being more attractive, but also MRI scans of the men’s brains showed activation in an area of the brain that is associated with processing rewards and decision making.

Evolutionary Attractions

Numerous cross-cultural studies have illustrated the primitive desire for healthy female bodies with low hip-to-waist ratios. Wider hips and larger breasts on women generally signal fertility because these characteristics are associated with the ability to carry and nurture a baby. As women age and their capacity for bearing children decreases, this hourglass figure becomes more difficult to maintain. Anthropologists suggest that many men are attracted to full-figured females because their brains are designed to subconsciously desire someone with whom they could have reproductive success.
