In the eyes of most men, the definition of masculinity is a broad, muscular chest. However, various factors such as hormonal imbalances, weight gain, and drug use can cause the development of “man boobs,” making them look anything but masculine.
Known as gynecomastia, more than half of all males are affected by this condition on a yearly basis. To effectively eliminate the appearance of overly large breasts and restore a well-contoured appearance to the chest area, thousands of men undergo gynecomastia (male breast reduction) surgery every year. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), nearly 23,000 males underwent this procedure in 2013. With an increase of 11 percent from 2012, more men are clearly choosing to do something about their gynecomastia.
What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia occurs when fat deposits and excess glandular tissue accumulate in the breast area. This condition not only makes men to look less physically attractive, but often cause them to feel less confident about themselves.
Am I a Candidate?
Gynecomastia surgery can only be performed on men who are in good overall physical health and have no serious medical conditions. Even though this procedure can be performed on males of all ages, it should not be carried out until the chest is fully developed.
Gynecomastia surgery may be beneficial if you experience the following:
- Are unhappy with the appearance of your breasts
- Experience physical pain because of your breasts
- Have good skin elasticity
- Are within thirty to forty pounds of your ideal weight
- Have already tried diet and exercise to decrease your breast size
How is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?
Gynecomastia surgery is intended to restore the male breasts to a natural contour by removing excess fat and glandular tissue through liposuction. After the patient is put under general anesthesia, Dr. Roussalis will make tiny incisions underneath the folds of the breasts. Once a cannula is inserted under the skin, it is gently moved back-and-forth to separate the fat cells from the other tissues. A vacuum device is then used to permanently suction out fat deposits, and the incisions are closed with sutures.
Male breast reduction surgery is a very safe and effective procedure that Dr. John Roussalis performs on a regular basis for men of all ages.
