CoolSculpting® and Liposuction Similarities

Both CoolSculpting® and liposuction are fat removal procedures. Both can target specific areas of unwanted fat and permanently remove fat from the body. To undergo either procedure, candidates must have realistic expectations, be at or near their ideal weight, and have good overall health. While the true results timeline differs, the best results are seen several months after either procedure. Both of these processes can cause side effects such as bruising, swelling, redness, and discomfort, although these are more common after liposuction because the procedure is more invasive.

CoolSculpting® and Liposuction Differences

One of the major differences between these two fat removal techniques is that liposuction is a surgical procedure, whereas CoolSculpting® is non-surgical. Another difference is the mechanism by which these procedures get rid of body fat. CoolSculpting® eliminates fat by freezing it with controlled cooling, thereby destroying the fat cells so that the body can flush them away over time. Liposuction removes fat by using suction technology to immediately extract it from the body through a thin, hollow tube called a cannula.

CoolSculpting® Advantages Over Liposuction

CoolSculpting®’s chief advantage over liposuction is that the procedure is non-surgical. This procedure requires no incisions, has minimal pain or discomfort, and requires no downtime. The treatment is generally considered relaxing, and patients can immediately return to work afterward if they desire. Side effects with CoolSculpting® also tend to be minimal. Liposuction, on the other hand, requires minor incisions, has several days of recovery, and may cause pain or discomfort. CoolSculpting® is an excellent treatment option for patients who want to avoid invasive procedures like liposuction.

Liposuction Advantages Over CoolSculpting®

Liposuction also has a few advantages over CoolSculpting®. One primary advantage is its wider range of treatment areas: while CoolSculpting® is limited to the thighs, hips, abdomen, love handles, and neck, liposuction can be performed on these areas and multiple others. Patients can receive liposuction nearly anywhere, such as on the lower legs, hips, abdomen, buttocks, thighs, back, chest, neck, upper arms, and even the jawline and cheeks. Also, liposuction results can be seen immediately, as soon as swelling subsides. This is unlike CoolSculpting®, which requires up to several months for the body to flush away the frozen fat cells before you can observe noticeable results. Liposuction is an excellent treatment option for patients who desire immediate results, need treatment for a wider range of areas, and/or have no apprehensions about undergoing a safe yet invasive procedure.

Both CoolSculpting® and liposuction can improve body contour and definition by permanently removing fat from the body. Whichever procedure you choose, you should continue a healthy lifestyle to maintain your improved body contours long term.
